Khalsa laboured to a goalless draw at Lye in a match where neither side were quite unable to unlock their opponents’ defences but in which the home side almost came good late on.
After a scrappy first 15 minutes, Lye moved into the ascendency with Josh McKenzie and Jack Till producing good saves from Sam Arnold.
Josh Thomas had a chance at the other end on 24 minutes, forcing a good save from Matt Sargent before the game settled back into midfield skirmishes and misplaced passes.
The second half was much the same. On 50 minutes a rare flash of inspiration from Lee Chilton saw him feed Dan Westwood whose shot was blocked at the crucial moment by Jack Pearlman and two minutes later Chilton forced a routine save from Sargent after a good ball over the top by Carlo Franco.
Thomas had another good opening on 55 minutes, heading over a delightful Alex Melbourne cross from the left wing and 60 seconds later Lewis Worley flashed an effort wide of Arnold’s post.
The last 15 minutes saw Lye finish the stronger. Worley had another good opportunity on 77 minutes, screwing an effort wide of the near post. With two minutes to go Aaron Bishop headed onto the crossbar from a sumptuous left wing freekick.
And with seconds on the clock McKenzie made one of a handful runs that wasn’t offside and with the goal at his mercy somehow contrived to roll the ball past the post, much to Khalsa’s relief.
