On the opening day of the 2016-17 FA Women’s Premier League, Khalsa suffered a heavy defeat away to Loughborough Foxes. This extremely fast paced, end to end game saw the Foxes take the lead after sharp passing and a long pass that cut straight through Khalsa’s defence gifting the ball to Cooper who calmly chipped the ball into the bottom right corner.
Loughborough then picked up on loose passing from Khalsa and used the ball well. After a forty yard from Seaton, the midfielder then played a one-two with Cooper to emphatically put the Foxes 2-0 to the good.
As the Leicestershire-based team attacked came forward, they yet again took advantage of poor Khalsa passing to put together neat passing in the 18 yard box, allowing Seaton to get a powerful shot away. Thankfully this time Toni Parkes was able to save and collect the ball.
Khalsa were then the ones to pounce on poor passing. A short throw allowed Sporting to put together a one two, which then resulted in a great cross that, with a bit of luck, landed to Jodie Lewis who powered the ball over the Foxes keeper and into the roof of the net. Khalsa then looked to get back on to equal terms with a series of great counter attacks, notably Lewis sneaking through the Loughborough defence to poke the ball just wide from a great cross.
Unfortunately, no leveller was to come and the Foxes quick counter attack come back to bite Sporting. Great one and two touch football between the team in blue lead to Pilling cutting inside and curling the ball into the top right corner.
As the sun came out for the second half Khalsa could not take advantage of poor defending from the opposition and they fluffed their shots. Foxes responded to this by piling to the other end of the field, eventually winning a free kick which was then taken short and smashed into the gloves of Parkes who had to produce a great save.
After Khalsa failed to clear their lines in the penalty box the ball scrambled to Pilling who produced a powerful from twenty-five yards out to put the Foxes 4-1 to the good. Another great goal was soon to come for Loughborough. A good free kick into the box resulted in the ball dropping to Moore who was loose of her marker. The midfielder then calmly half volleyed the ball into the top right of the Khalsa goal.
Sporting’s day then went from bad to worse. After a great long ball and flick on up field, Khalsa won a penalty, which was then placed just wide. This was definitely not the dream start to the season the Khalsa Women’s first team dreamt of.
Khalsa Women’s Reserves had a much better weekend. A 4-2 away victory against Leek Town Ladies gave them yet more confidence as they close on on the opening day of their campaign.
After having a two goal advantage pegged back to level terms Khalsa calmly finished the game off in the last twenty-five minutes putting away two more goals. The reserves last friendly is against Bedworth Ladies this Sunday before the eagerly awaited big kick off on September 4.
