A four-star performance by Sporting Khalsa helped them see off Coventry Sphinx in a match they dominated from start to finish.
Sphinx’s Robbie Banks began causing problems as the visitors went in search of an equaliser. On 16 minutes he engineered a shooting opportunity that called Mihai Gherasim into action and seven minutes later he hit the post from a corner.
Craig Bannister doubled the lead on 31 minutes, a fine free kick putting Khalsa 2-0 up. And two minutes later he crushed the visitors’ souls with a second, some brilliant footwork and finishing from the edge of the box for a goal of real quality.
The second half saw Sphinx pull one back, Mitch Thompson given plenty of time to finish and make it 3-1 on 55 minutes.
Bannister, seeking his hat-trick, flashed a volley wide on 66 minutes while at the other end Thompson had a really good opportunity to set nerves jangling but fluffed his lines badly.
A good save by Sphinx keeper Ash Mahotra denied Bannister his treble with an acute chip on 89 minutes but the fourth goal eventually came deep in stoppage time courtesy of substitute Brad Lawley, heading home a Wherton corner.
