Craig Bannister – last gasp equaliser took the game into extra time.

(Market Drayton win 4-1 on penalties)

It was cruel for Khalsa as they crashed out of the FA Cup at the preliminary round stage on penalties.

Khalsa took the lead early on through Craig Bannister, a cracking left-foot drive past Ash Rawlins putting the visitors on the front foot. Callum Cooper almost doubled the lead on 16 minutes, Rawlins producing a brilliant save as he tried to go round him.

Market Drayton’s best opportunity of the first half came when a free-kick just outside the box flashed just wide after Carlo Franco brought down Joe Cuff.

There was more purpose from Market Drayton after the break – captain Dan Beddows had a shot just wide not long after the restart, signalling the home side’s intent to get back into the game.

Beddows got the equaliser on 65 minutes, capitalising on a mix-up in the Khalsa defensive ranks to finish past Tom Turner.

The game settled again for the next 20 minutes before a frantic finish.

First Cuff burst through and rifled home on 86 minutes for what looked likely to be the winner for Market Drayton. Khalsa were having none of it, however. A last-gasp corner and with Turner sprinting from his own box to the opposite end in pursuit of the equaliser, the ball was controversially ruled to have crossed the line after hitting both crossbar and post via Bannister.

So, into extra time.

The first period of extra-time saw the best chance fall to James Bennett but he shot wide. The second period was a bit feisty with the players squaring-up at one point and Khalsa having the better of the play.

Rawlins pulled off a magnificent save from Rikardo Reid and a last minute free-kick from Bannister went close before the game finished 2-2 and onto the penalties.

After Cuff made it 1-0 to the home side, Dave Meese rattled the crossbar with his effort before James Bennett made it 2-0. Bannister then had his penalty saved by Rawlins. Andre James then stretched the lead to 3-0 before Mykel Beckley made it 3-1. It was then left to Beddows to wrap things up with his kick to make it 4-1.
